Finishing Well - Week 2
5 Day Work Week Devotional
1. Day 1: Starting with the End in Mind
Devotional: Finishing well in our faith journey is a goal we all strive for. King Solomon, despite his God-given wisdom, ended his life in failure due to disobedience and idolatry. His downfall began with small compromises, such as marrying many wives and accumulating wealth, which led him astray from God's commandments. In contrast, the Apostle Paul provides a powerful example of finishing well. In 2 Timothy 4:6-8, Paul speaks of his life as an offering to God, having fought the good fight and finished the race. To finish well, we must live each day with the end in mind, be led by God's Word, and avoid small compromises that can lead to significant consequences.
Verse: For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. - 2 Timothy 4:6-8
Question: What small compromises in your life could potentially lead you away from God's path?
Quote: To finish well, we must live each day with the end in mind, be led by God's Word!
Prayer: Lord, help me to live each day with the end in mind. Guide me by Your Word and keep me from making small compromises that could lead me astray. Amen.
2. Day 2: The Danger of Small Compromises
Devotional: Solomon's downfall began with small compromises. He married many wives and accumulated wealth, which led him away from God's commandments. These small steps of disobedience eventually resulted in significant consequences, including idolatry and child sacrifice. In our own lives, small compromises can also lead us away from God's path. We must be vigilant and guard our hearts against these seemingly minor decisions that can have major impacts on our spiritual journey.
Verse: Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. - Proverbs 4:23
Question: How can you guard your heart against small compromises in your daily life?
Quote: Small compromises can lead to huge consequences.
Prayer: Father, help me to guard my heart and be vigilant against small compromises. Strengthen me to stay true to Your commandments and follow Your path. Amen.
3. Day 3: Discipline in the Race
Devotional: The Apostle Paul likens the Christian life to a race that requires rigorous training and discipline. Just as athletes train to win a prize, we must also be disciplined in our spiritual journey to win the eternal prize. This means being consistent in our prayer life, studying God's Word, and living out our faith daily. Discipline helps us stay focused on the finish line and avoid the pitfalls that led to Solomon's downfall.
Verse: Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. - 1 Corinthians 9:24-25
Question: What areas of your spiritual life need more discipline and training?
Prayer: Lord, grant me the discipline to train for the race You have set before me. Help me to be consistent in my prayer life, study of Your Word, and living out my faith. Amen.
4. Day 4: Learning from Solomon's Mistakes
Devotional: Solomon knew better than to disobey God's commandments, yet he allowed fear and desire to lead him astray. He piled up chariots and horses out of fear, forgetting that God is the one who provides victory. We must learn from Solomon's mistakes and trust in God's provision and guidance. By doing so, we can avoid the pitfalls that led to Solomon's downfall and stay faithful to God's path.
Verse: The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord. - Proverbs 21:31
Question: In what areas of your life do you need to trust more in God's provision and guidance?
Prayer: Father, help me to trust in Your provision and guidance. Keep me from making decisions out of fear or desire, and help me to stay faithful to Your path. Amen.
5. Day 5: Finishing Well
Devotional: To finish well, we must start at the beginning with the end in mind. This means being led by God's Word and avoiding small compromises that can lead to significant consequences. By learning from Solomon's mistakes and following Paul's example, we can stay faithful and finish the race set before us. Whatever sacrifices, pain, or adversity we endure in this life, it will be worth it all when we reach the finish line and see Jesus waiting for us.
Verse: Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. - Psalm 90:12
Question: How can you live each day with the end in mind and stay faithful to God's path?
Quote: Start at the beginning, with the End in mind.
Prayer: Lord, teach me to number my days and live each day with the end in mind. Help me to stay faithful to Your path and avoid small compromises. Amen.
