3 Keys to Unlocking God’s Power in Your Life

As believers, we often long to experience the fullness of God’s power and presence in our lives. But what if the key to unlocking that power is simpler than we think? When we commit to growing in just three areas—intimacy with God, dying to self, and renewing our minds—we create space for God to work in powerful ways. Let’s explore these three areas:

1. Intimacy with God
The foundation of our spiritual life is a close, intimate relationship with God. It’s where our strength, peace, and power come from. James 4:8 (NLT) says, “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.”

When we seek God with all our hearts, we begin to experience His presence in ways that change everything. It’s not just about knowing about God, but knowing Him personally—listening to His voice, spending time in prayer, and worshiping Him in spirit and truth. Intimacy with God transforms us from the inside out.

Practical Steps:
  1. Set aside dedicated time each day to be alone with God.
  2. Spend time in the Word, allowing His truth to shape your heart.
  3. Cultivate a prayer life that includes both speaking and listening.

Here are some other scriptures that remind us of the importance of drawing near to God:
  • Psalm 63:1 (NLT): “O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.”
  • Jeremiah 29:13 (NLT): “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.”
  • Matthew 6:33 (NLT): “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
  • Psalm 145:18 (NLT): “The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth.”

2. Die to Self
Jesus calls us to die to ourselves daily, to let go of our desires, and follow Him. In Luke 9:23 (NLT), He says, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”

This isn’t easy, but it’s necessary for spiritual growth. Dying to self means surrendering our plans, our desires, and our need for control, and trusting that God’s way is better. It’s about letting go of our comfort zones and following Jesus wherever He leads.

Practical Steps:
  1. Regularly reflect on areas of your life where you’re holding on too tightly.
  2. Ask God to show you what you need to surrender to Him.
  3. Make small daily choices to prioritize God’s will over your own.

Here are more scriptures that emphasize the importance of surrendering our will to God:
  • Galatians 2:20 (NLT): “My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
  • John 3:30 (NLT): “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.”
  • Philippians 2:3-4 (NLT): “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”
  • Romans 12:1 (NLT): “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.”

3. Renewal of the Mind
Our thoughts shape our lives. If we’re constantly feeding our minds with the values and distractions of the world, it will be difficult to experience true transformation. Romans 12:2 (NLT) urges us, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”

Renewing our minds means aligning our thoughts with God’s truth, letting go of harmful patterns of thinking, and allowing His Word to guide us. This renewal empowers us to live differently, to respond to life with faith instead of fear, and to make decisions that honor God.

Practical Steps:
  1. Be intentional about what you allow into your mind—focus on things that are true, pure, and excellent.
  2. Memorize scripture and meditate on God’s promises.
  3. Replace negative or harmful thoughts with the truth of God’s Word.

Here are more scriptures that speak to the power of renewing our minds:
  • Philippians 4:8 (NLT): “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
  • Ephesians 4:23-24 (NLT): “Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.”
  • Colossians 3:2 (NLT): “Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.”
  • 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NLT): “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”

A Life of Transformation
When we pursue intimacy with God, die to ourselves, and renew our minds, we create an environment in our lives where God’s power can flow freely. These aren’t one-time actions—they are lifelong commitments to growth and transformation.

The more we invest in these areas, the more we’ll experience God’s strength, wisdom, and guidance. We will begin to see His power at work in our lives, in our families, and in our communities.

Let’s make it our goal to live in the fullness of what God has for us. As we commit to intimacy, surrender, and renewal, we’ll find that God’s power is available to us in greater measure than we ever imagined.
