From Distracted To Devoted - Week 3
Day 1: Understanding Our Identity in Christ
Devotional
In the second temptation of Jesus, Satan challenges Him to throw Himself off the temple, questioning His identity as the Son of God. Jesus responds with, 'You must not test the Lord your God.' This response highlights the importance of knowing and trusting our identity in Christ. When we are secure in who we are in Him, we don't need to prove ourselves or test God's love and protection. Instead, we can rest in the assurance that we are His children, loved and valued beyond measure.
Bible Verse: 'You must not test the Lord your God as you did when you complained at Massah. You must diligently obey the commands of the Lord your God—all the laws and decrees he has given you. ' - Deuteronomy 6:16-17
Reflection Question: How can you remind yourself of your identity in Christ when faced with challenges or doubts?
Quote: Sin has this ability to put doubt in us that we even belong to God.
Prayer: Lord, help me to remember that I am Your child, loved and valued. Give me the strength to trust in Your word and not feel the need to test Your love and protection. Amen.
Day 2: Trusting God's Word Over Our Desires
Devotional
Jesus' response to Satan's temptation teaches us the importance of relying on God's word rather than manipulating it to suit our desires. When we face temptations, it's easy to twist Scripture to justify our actions. However, true faith means letting God's word guide us, even when it goes against our fleshly desires. By doing so, we honor God and align our lives with His will.
Bible Verse: 'Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ” Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’ ” ' -Matthew 4:5-7
Reflection Question: In what areas of your life are you tempted to manipulate God's word to fit your desires?
Quote: Living by faith means letting God’s word guide you rather than manipulating his promises to get what you want to have your plans met.
Prayer: Father, help me to trust in Your word and not twist it to suit my desires. Guide me to live according to Your will and honor You in all that I do. Amen.
Day 3: Feeding Our Souls with Scripture
Devotional
To survive and thrive in this world, we must feed our souls with Scripture. Just as our bodies need food to function, our spirits need the nourishment that comes from God's word. By immersing ourselves in the Bible, we equip ourselves to face life's challenges and grow in our faith. Make it a priority to spend time in God's word daily, allowing it to shape and strengthen you.
Bible Verse: 'There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.' - Hebrews 5:11-14
Reflection Question: How can you incorporate more time in God's word into your daily routine?
Prayer: Lord, help me to prioritize time in Your word. Nourish my soul and strengthen my faith as I seek to know You more deeply. Amen.
Day 4: Assurance Through Obedience
Devotional
Obedience to God's word is the litmus test for the assurance of our salvation. We don't obey to earn God's love; we obey because we are recipients of His love. When we live in obedience, we experience the peace and confidence that comes from knowing we are walking in God's will. Reflect on your actions and ensure they align with God's teachings, allowing His love to guide you.
Bible Verse: 'My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world. And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did. '
- 1 John 2:1-6
Reflection Question: Are there areas in your life where you struggle with obedience? How can you surrender these to God?
Prayer: Father, help me to live in obedience to Your word. Let Your love guide my actions and give me the assurance of my salvation. Amen.
Day 5: Trusting God's Plans
Devotional
God has better plans for us than we can imagine. When we trust in His plans and live according to His word, we resist the temptation to test Him or engage in self-destructive behaviors. Instead of seeking our own way, we lay down our opinions and follow Him. By doing so, we make a meaningful impact in the world and fulfill the purpose He has for our lives.
Bible Verse: 'How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty. ' - Philippians 4:10-14
Reflection Question What steps can you take to trust God's plans and resist the temptation to follow your own way?
Prayer: Lord, help me to trust in Your plans and resist the temptation to follow my own way. Strengthen me to live according to Your word and fulfill the purpose You have for my life. Amen.
